PHILLY BLUNT (PERTH)
In the early years of the new millennium, a new figure appeared as if out of nowhere on the Perth music scene. Quickly gaining attention and cementing his position on the competitive dance music map by winning the state title in the Channel [v] DJ comp (a title he still holds today – mostly due to the lack of any further channel [v] DJ comps).
After taking up residence in many of the city’s top venues, Philly had not only gained a dedicated following, but a reputation around town as quite the ʻparty starterʼ.
Being known as a party starter behind the decks was one thing, but Philly decided to take this oft used accolade literally and make it a reality, starting what are now two of the longest running and most popular parties in the Perth scene: Bootleg and Force Majeure.
Bootleg is straight party and since its inception in 2007, its popularity has seen it cross the country. It has also spawned another brainchild of Phillyʼs; The Bootleg Blog. This blog dishes up tasty free tunes made by producers all over the world, as well as a healthy serving of Phillyʼs own material, to over 10,000 users a month.
Force Majeure caters to those who like it rough, musically that is, quickly becoming the cities foremost outlet for heavy beats whether it be breaks, electro, dnb, dubstep or whatever as well as hosting a varied range of interstate and international guests.
Not content with all this, creating music became the focus and his music was quickly snapped up by renowned labels such as Goodgroove, Destination? and Bombastic Jam to name a few. But being on labels was also not enough to quench Phillyʼs thirst for world domination, so he created his own: Grits N Gravy Records. The first release shot to #1 onJunoDownload and the label quickly became Perthʼs premier record label thus winning the Perth Dance Music Award (for Best Record Label).
This year sees Mr Blunt expanding once more, with new projects and collaborations already garnering fruit. A partnership with scene stalwart Micah – Black & Blunt, swiftly taking the duo to the dizzying heights of the Beatport charts, a collaborative project with esteemed vocalist Will Stoker and his own side project; The Nines are set to ensure that Philly Blunt remains a name on everyone’s lips.
